Opposition attack injures Yemen's president
by Shazy | 12:31 PM in Opposition attack injures Yemen's president, Worldnews |
Ali Abdullah Saleh was in hospital "in good health" and would "soon" speak publicly, officials said.
The PM and speaker of parliament were hurt and three guards killed.
Earlier troops shelled the home of the brother of the tribal leader whose supporters they are fighting.
Thousands meanwhile attended a funeral for 50 people killed in the violence, and there were huge demonstrations after Friday prayers.
In the southern city of Taiz, at least three members of the security forces and two protesters were killed in clashes, officials and doctors said.
It was not clear if the security forces were soldiers or police. One report said they had been killed by a rocket-propelled grenade.
A crackdown on protesters in Taiz on Sunday left more than 50 demonstrators dead.
The US has sent an envoy to the Gulf to discuss ways of stopping the violence, which has brought Yemen to the brink of civil war.
The White House condemned the recent bloodshed, including the attack on the presidential palace.
"Violence cannot resolve the issues that confront Yemen, and today's events cannot be a justification for a new round of fighting," spokesman Jay Carney said in a statement.
More than 350 people have been killed since the uprising started in January, but at least 135 of them have died in the past 10 days.
Western and regional powers have been urging Mr Saleh to sign a Gulf Co-operation Council-brokered deal that would see him hand over to his deputy in return for an amnesty from prosecution.
He has agreed to sign on several occasions, but then backed out.
GCC Secretary General Abdulattif al-Zayani called for an end to the fighting and said the council was ready to do all it could to help, Reuters news agency reported.
'Scratches'
There has been heavy fighting in the northern Sanaa district of Hassaba since last week between Mr Saleh's forces and tribesman loyal to Sheikh Sadiq al-Ahmar, the head of the powerful Hashid tribal confederation.

John Edwards indicted by federal grand jury
by Shazy | 11:59 AM in John Edwards indicted by federal grand jury |
CBS Affiliate WRAL reports that a warrant has been issued for Edwards' arrest, and that he is expected to appear in a Winston-Salem courtroom Friday afternoon.
The indictment is the culmination of a federal investigation that lasted more than two years and scoured through virtually every corner of Edwards' political career.
Edwards' attorney Greg Craig met Friday with prosecutors in North Carolina, an indication that the former presidential candidate is likely to be charged, either in a grand jury indictment or in a negotiated charge to which he would plead guilty.
Justice Department officials in Washington have approved criminal charges; they decided that the hundreds of thousands of dollars that two Edwards donors gave to help keep his mistress in hiding were contributions that should have been reported publicly by his campaign fund because they aided his bid for the Democratic White House nomination.
Edwards' lawyers have argued that the funds were gifts from old friends intended to keep the affair a secret from his wife, Elizabeth, who died of cancer in December.
Edwards' attorneys have denounced the investigation as a waste of resources and contend he did not violate the law.
The case against Edwards focused on the private money used to keep Edwards' mistress in hiding. Andrew Young, a former aide to Edwards, initially claimed paternity of mistress Rielle Hunter's child and traveled around the country keeping her in seclusion. Young has said he received hundreds of thousands of dollars of support from two wealthy Edwards donors.
WRAL reports that the federal investigation zeroed in on money from Rachel "Bunny" Mellon, a 100-year-old heiress to pharmaceutical and banking fortunes and a major donor to Edwards' campaign; and from wealthy Texas lawyer Fred Baron, who served as Edwards' campaign finance chairman.
Mellon gave $3.4 million in late 2007 to The Alliance for a New America, a nonprofit supporting Edwards' candidacy. Former Edwards aide Andrew Young wrote last year in his tell-all book, "The Politician," that Mellon also gave Edwards $700,000 as a gift for personal use.
Young told WRAL News in a 2010 interview that Mellon was in the dark about how her money - campaign workers commonly referred to the checks she wrote as "Bunny money" - was being used.
According to Young, Baron financed flights and paid $20,000 a month in rent on a California home for Hunter and Young's family during the period when Young pretended to be the father of Hunter's baby to protect Edwards from negative publicity.
Young also told WRAL News that Baron paid him $325,000 to finish his own home back in Chapel Hill so it could be sold when he moved to California.
Baron died from cancer in 2008, but his widow appeared before the federal grand jury in Raleigh in January. Investigators also interviewed Mellon twice at her estate in Virginia, and some of her family members testified before the grand jury in December.
Hunter, Young and other campaign insiders testified before the grand jury in 2009.
If Edwards goes to trial to fight the charges and loses, sentencing guidelines would factor in the money involved in the cover-up. A case involving $1 million to $2.5 million could signal a prison sentence of 51 to 63 months.
Another dent in an Edwards' revival is moving ahead in civil court, where Young and Hunter are battling over a purported sex tape involving the former candidate. Edwards has been deposed as part of that lawsuit.

They were "woken up" soon after when Mr Days recovered. His manager said the performer has a voice recording which can be used to bring people round. Mr Days, who has hypnotised members of the pop band Blue on television, did not require hospital treatment, his manager Tara Nix said.
'Loads of commotion'
She added: "He was out for a little while and that is why we asked the audience to leave.
"Three people were left on stage but we always have a back-up tape and a back-up hypnotist to step in if needed.
"Luckily, it wasn't too long until he recovered and he and the guests are fine.
"To be honest I think this is the first time it has ever happened to a hypnotist."
Audience member Fiona Faye said: "He was pulled from stage and there was loads of commotion from a number of people backstage including one man who ran to the other side of the stage to get a first aid kit.
"At first the audience, including us, found it very funny and thought it was part of the act, but as time went on we began to realise that it was not part of the show and he had actually hurt himself.
"At this point we become very worried not only for David Days but also the guests that were onstage oblivious to anything as they were still hypnotised.
"They simply just sat there 'asleep'."
This might still be classified as ‘rumors’ for now but we all know that it is a known fact that Apple releases a refresh of its products yearly and they always stick to the same calendar year-in and year-out. If they stay on course then we are definitely headed for an iPhone refresh this coming June. All hints are pointing to this year’s WWDC. The date for the possible iPhone launch is this June 20.
There are also rumors going around that Apple wants to tap a new market. Insiders are saying that there will be a cheap ‘iPhone 5′ coming but this is rumor is still hazy for now. I still can’t imagine Apple doing this but it would make perfect business sense for them. It wouldn’t also be bad for the tight-budget consumers either. Imagine an Apple branded phone for less, that would be a win-win for all.
The iPhone 5 is also being rumored to have the new Near Field Communications (NFC) technology, making contactless communication possible. MobileMe is also a set for a very major revamp and the release will most likely be simultaneous with the iPhone 5 or iPhone 5 models. Lastly, bloggers are saying that there will be a white iPhone 5 coming and it will have a simultaneous release with the black model, just like the iPad 2. We have never seen the white iPhone 4 so will Apple push through with this?

The 23rd Bond film will star Daniel Craig – his third stab at playing 007 – and will be directed by Sam Mendes, the director of American Beauty, a darkly comic take on suburbia that won a clutch of Oscars in 2000.
The latest Bond film hit the skids last year when MGM Studios filed for bankruptcy protection. The company has since been restructured. The new owners of MGM, along with Bond producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, confirmed last night that 007 will be back on 9 November 2012. Production is set to begin at the end of this year.
There had been fears that Daniel Craig, a more ruthless and cold-blooded Bond than portrayed by Pierce Brosnan, would walk away because of the uncertainty.

But worryingly Sherlock sometimes prefers to hunt on foot, rather than scan the ground from above.
Police used a piece of shroud from a mortuary for the training exercise, German media report.
The vultures are thought to be better than sniffer dogs at finding bodies when a large area has to be searched and the terrain is difficult, for example if it is densely overgrown.
But the experiment raises ethical concerns because of the risk that a vulture could start pecking at a dead body, the Berliner Morgenpost newspaper says.
This week Miss Marple and Columbo, from a zoo in Austria, joined Sherlock for the exercise in the reserve, north of Hanover.
Police are using three birds because the vultures prefer to roam big areas as a group.
“The vultures may work much more effectively than sniffer dogs,” said a Hanover police officer, Rainer Herrmann.
“There’s a lot of interest in this. We’ve had inquiries from Germany, Austria and Switzerland,” he said.

The Fort Worth Transportation Authority's updated dress code lets bus drivers turn away passengers whose pants sag below the waist.
Joan Hunter, a spokeswoman for the system known as the T, says it's about respecting everyone who chooses to ride city buses.
"It's not like they have to go home," Hunter said. "They can just pull it up. It's to be respectful of other riders."
Posters are being placed on buses and billboards to let riders know that saggy pants are not acceptable, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Tuesday.
The no-saggy pants campaign began in August 2008, but the T recently made an administrative change to its dress code giving bus drivers authority to deny boarding to violators, Hunter said.
The policy change took effect May 12, and that day drivers asked about 50 riders to pull up their pants before boarding, according to Hunter. All complied, she said.
"They'll mess with our freedom. Pretty soon they're going to ban dreadlocks, too," said Cory Shelby, a tattoo artist who rides city buses.
Shelby, 29, recently was told to pull up his pants before boarding, even though he said his black cargo shorts were not drooping enough to be distasteful.
"They told me I had to pull up my pants," he said, "And my boxers weren't even showing."
City Councilman Frank Moss has said the saggy-pants look hurts the ability of young people to land jobs.
"This shows we have taken the overall concept of pulling them up to a new level," Moss said during a recent council meeting. "There are some real policies in place to say, if you don't pull `em up, you can't ride."

Terry & Capello back Wilshere's U-21 absence
by Shazy | 10:33 AM in Terry and Capello back Wilshere's U-21 absence |
Opinion was split on what would actually be best for the player's development, but Terry is certain the correct call has been made.
Terry said: "He doesn't look tired. He's played 60 games this season, his first full season, and I see him now as a huge part of our senior set-up. I think if we're going to nurture and look after him, and we're looking to the Euros next summer, he has to be looked after.
"What's happened is unfortunate for the Under-21s, but Jack has been different class for us in the last couple of games. I see him as a major part of our set-up here.
"I had a chat with him. It was a big issue. He's obviously disappointed that he's not going. But, at the same time, he feels part of the senior set-up. That's the confidence he's brought in. That's encouraging for him as well.
"I honestly feel we need to look after him and make him feel comfortable in his decision.
"Not many of us expected him to step up the way he has done. Everyone was keen to see fresh faces and fresh players come in, and he's been the one who's stood out out of everyone. Hopefully he can have an injury-free season next year and be ready for the Euros.
"The way he glides past players is very much Zola-esque a little bit. He shows a huge amount of confidence for someone so young. His ability speaks for itself.''
Fabio Capello has no fears about Wilshere lasting the pace next season.
"All the players will play a lot of games,'' said the Italian. "Jack is really young and will recover quickly. Injury-wise it is more difficult 10 years into your career. I don't have a concern for Jack next year at all.
"He can play one game without any problems. During training he was really good, just like everyone else.''

The implications, warns a newly-released World Bank report, could be grave.
"We need to ensure that African lives do not become a silent casualty of the global financial downturn," demanded Paula Akugizibwe, regional treatment literacy and advocacy coordinator of Windhoek-based AIDS and Rights Alliance for Southern Africa (ARASA) in Namibia. "Our lives are not cheap or expendable. We expect health to be prioritised over weapons, sports and lavish politics," she added.
Tanzania was the first sub-Saharan country to announce a 25 percent cut of its annual HIV/AIDS budget.
"This will have a significant impact on human resources in the sector and on health service delivery," explained Akugizibwe. "Long-term health planning will become completely unpredictable."
The situation is not much better in neighbouring countries. The South African government has indicated that large private firms, especially mining companies, are likely to cut their HIV prevention programmes affecting thousands of employees and their families.
Even worse, Botswana’s presidential spokesperson Jeff Ramsay recently announced government will not be able to include new patients in its free antiretroviral (ARV) treatment programme from 2016 onwards, because it doesn’t have sufficient funds to expand the programme.
Smaller budgets
All this stands in direct contradiction to a commitment to set aside 15 percent of their national expenditure towards health made by African heads of state during a meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, in 2001.
"Very few countries have met this goal. The money is there. It’s all about prioritisation of resources," Akugizibwe told IPS. "The situation is very frightening, because governments cut back on already insufficient HIV treatment and care programmes," she warned.
Even international donor organisations have started to feel the financial crunch. The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria recently announced it is at least $4 billion short of the money it will need to continue funding essential HIV, TB and malaria services in 2010. The coalition believes there is a $10.7 billion funding gap for regional implementation of the Global Plan to Stop TB alone.
To mitigate the impact of the financial crisis on HIV health service provision, a number of AIDS and tuberculosis (TB) activists from across Sub-Saharan Africa – including ARASA, the South African Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) and the Kenyan Collaborative Fund for HIV Treatment Preparedness – have now come together to lobby for continued health financing.
The right to health and treatment are non-negotiable, the activists say. They now want to hold the heads of state and international aid organisations to their commitments made to increase and improve HIV treatment and care.
"Broken promises and skewed priorities of governments and donors have reduced the right to health and access to treatment to unattainable rhetoric," lamented TAC women’s health programme coordinator Nonkosi Khumalo.
The activist coalition demands that African governments and international funders close the gap on health financing and warn that the lives of millions of people in Sub-Saharan Africa are in jeopardy because of the lack of political will and investment to realise the right of access to life-saving treatment.
"In the last few months, we have seen trillions of dollars spent on financial bailouts to stimulate economic recovery. A tiny portion of this sum could have bought quality, sustainable healthcare for millions of people," Khumalo further explained.
Broken promises
According to the 2009 World Bank "Averting a Human Crisis During the Global Downturn" report, countries in Eastern and Southern Africa are the most vulnerable. Researchers estimate the negative impact of this crisis will affect 70 percent of people on ARV treatment in Africa within the next twelve months.
With a few exceptions, such as Botswana and South Africa, most countries have limited fiscal space they can use to cushion the impact of a decline in international aid, World Bank says.
Already, large percentages of households in Sub-Saharan Africa are poor, and the large number of people on treatment means ever-increasing treatment programme costs.
Yet, Sub-Saharan Africa only accounts for one percent of global health expenditure and two percent of the global health workforce. Currently, only one third of HIV-positive Africans in need of antiretroviral (ARV) treatment can access it, according to TAC.
Failure to meet the commitment to bringing universal access to treatment for people with HIV who need it, the World Bank report notes, will call into question the legitimacy of development assistance for health, threaten the gains in health system capacity delivered through HIV treatment programmes.
It will ultimately result in greater long-term costs due to higher rates of transmission, more TB cases and larger numbers requiring expensive second-line drugs for both HIV and TB.
Dr Bactrin Killingo, chairperson of the Nairobi-based Collaborative Fund for HIV Treatment Preparedness agrees.
"If current cost constraints faced by HIV treatment programmes are not addressed, while the demand for expensive second-line treatment increases, we will soon find ourselves in a situation similar to the 1990s, where millions of lives were lost unnecessarily because people could not afford the treatment they needed to stay alive".
The ''Bad Teacher'' star confirmed she was dating Rodriguez last month even though they had been together for over a year, but friends say the pair has decided to split, reported Femalefirst.

Octomom doctor license revoked. Octomom's Fertility Doctor Has License Revoked. California medical officials revoked the license of the fertility doctor who helped "Octomom" Nadya Suleman become the mother of 14 children through repeated in vitro treatments, according to a decision made public Wednesday.
The Medical Board of California said it was necessary to revoke Dr. Michael Kamrava's license to protect the public. The revocation takes effect July 1.
The Beverly Hills fertility doctor has acknowledged implanting 12 embryos into Suleman prior to the pregnancy that produced her octuplets. It was six times the norm for a woman her age.
That was a mistake, according to the board.
"While the evidence did not establish (Kamrava) as a maverick or deviant physician, oblivious to standards of care in IVF practice, it certainly demonstrated that he did not exercise sound judgment in the transfer of twelve embryos to (Suleman)," the board said in its 45-page decision.
Since Suleman's octuplets were born in January 2009, the medical community and public have puzzled over how a doctor could have implanted so many embryos into a patient and how the babies were carried to premature birth.
In practice, fertility doctors avoid mega-births, as high number multiple births are sometimes called, because the process can put the mother at risk for serious complications and death. Crowding in a mother's uterus could also result in premature birth, cerebral palsy, developmental delays or other health problems for the babies.
To date, Suleman's octuplets are the world's longest surviving set.
Kamrava's lawyer Henry Fenton did not return phone calls seeking comment.
With a tearful apology, Kamrava testified at his hearing last year that he implanted Suleman with 12 embryos because she consented to undergoing fetal reduction if too many of the babies became viable.
Kamrava said that months passed after the treatment, and he never heard from her, despite efforts to contact her. He says he only heard from Suleman again after the babies were born.
The state also found that Kamrava was negligent in the care of two other patients — a major factor in the decision to revoke his license.
"This is not a one-patient case or a two-patient case; it is a three-patient case and the established causes of discipline include repeated negligent acts," the board decision reads.
Kamrava was found to have implanted seven embryos in a 48-year-old patient, resulting in quadruplets. One fetus died before birth.
Kamrava said at his hearing that he recommended four embryos be implanted, but he implanted seven because the patient insisted.
In another case, Kamrava went ahead with in vitro fertilization after tests detected atypical cells, which can indicate the presence of a tumor. The patient was later diagnosed with stage-three cancer and had to have her uterus and ovaries removed before undergoing chemotherapy.
Kamrava said he should have referred her to a gynecological oncologist but simultaneous to her treatment, news broke about Suleman's octuplets and he became too distracted to follow up the patient's care.
In February, a judge recommended the board put Kamrava on five years of probation, but the ultimate licensing decision belonged to the board. Citing negative publicity surrounding Suleman's case, the judge had said it was unlikely Kamrava would make similar mistakes again.
The board "adamantly" disagreed with that assessment, saying the doctor had already used bad press as an excuse for failing to care properly for the fertility patient who should have been referred to a cancer specialist.
"Accordingly, the board is not persuaded that relying on the public or the media to fulfill or supplement the board's public protection role is sound policy," the decision reads.
