Blackbeard's anchor recovered?
Blackbeard's anchor recovered?. An anchor from what's believed to be the wreck of the pirate Blackbeard's flagship has been raised from the ocean floor off the North Carolina coast.

Archaeologists believe the anchor recovered Friday is from the Queen Anne's Revenge, which sank in 1718. That was five months before Blackbeard was killed in a battle.

The artifact is the third-largest item at the shipwreck, outsized only by two other anchors.

Researchers retrieved the anchor from the shipwreck about 20 feet under water and were bringing it to shore. The work to retrieve it began last week. The anchor is about 11 feet long.

The recovery coincides with the release this month of "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides." The movie features both Blackbeard and the Queen Anne's Revenge.

elderly woman dentist
elderly woman dentist. Dentist jailed after brawl over false teeth.

A Deltona, Florida dentist was sent to jail after engaging in a false-teeth tug-of-war with an 85-year-old woman Tuesday.

Investigators said Virginia Graham was in pain during a fitting and ended up throwing her dentures at her dentist, Dr. Michael Hammonds.

Graham said she went into Elkcam Dental in Deltona for a routine denture adjustment, but she wound up bloodied and bruised after she and Hammonds fought over the fit of her bottom partials.

"They were making my gums raw, just rubbing up and down raw," said Graham.
Hammonds told investigators Graham took out the dentures and threw them at him.

Graham, meanwhile, said she wanted him to fix the fit.

"I said, 'I want my teeth back,' so he's holding the teeth real tight and pulling them," Graham said.

Graham said the metal was digging into her hands, but she didn't give up the $900 dentures.

Giants catcher Buster Posey breaks ankle
Giants catcher Buster Posey breaks ankle. National League roundup: Giants' Buster Posey (broken leg) likely out for year.
Buster Posey was carted through a tunnel at AT&T Park on Thursday, a makeshift cast covering his left ankle and no emotion on his face.

Not exactly the exit the cornerstone of the World Series champion Giants wanted this season.

A night after Florida's Scott Cousins crashed into him at home plate, San Francisco's star catcher was put on the disabled list after an MRI confirmed Posey had a fractured left fibula and three torn ligaments in his left ankle. His season is likely over.

To make matter worse, Anibal Sanchez threw a five-hitter for a complete game to lead the Marlins to a 1-0 win on Thursday afternoon and cap a three-game sweep of the Giants.

Posey has been San Francisco's cleanup hitter, a team leader and key cog behind the plate for one of baseball's best rotations. The 2010 National League rookie of the year was batting .284 with four home runs and 21 RBIs, just finding his groove in the midst of a 13-game hitting streak to move the Giants into the NL West lead.

Arizona 6, Colorado 3: Micah Owings gave up one run in five innings for his first win in more than a year and Miguel Montero hit a three-run homer for the visiting Diamondbacks.

Chicago 9, New York 3: Carlos Zambrano allowed one earned run on six hits in six innings for the host Cubs. At the plate, Zambrano went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Philadelphia 10, Cincinnati 4: Hours after a Phillies batter won a game as a pitcher, Cliff Lee's offense lifted Philadelphia to another victory. It was a bizarre two days and 28 innings. Lee drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double and a single, and worked eight effective innings for the host Phillies.

Wednesday night, in the top of the 19th inning, with the score tied at 4, former Tiger Placido Polanco knocked in the winning run. In the bottom of the inning, second baseman Wilson Valdez came to the mound and worked a hitless 19th inning in his first professional pitching appearance.

Mark Zuckerberg kills what he eats
Mark Zuckerberg kills what he eats. Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly taken to eating only meat from animals he has killed in order to appreciate that a creature died so that he could live.
Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly taken to eating only meat from animals he has killed in order to appreciate that a creature died so that he could live.

The 27-year-old billionaire took on the dietary regimen as the latest in a series of "personal challenges" that he pursues in what little time he spends not working on Facebook, a Fortune magazine story explained on Thursday. "I'm eating a lot healthier foods," Zuckerberg is quoted as telling Fortune while discussing his switch to slaughtering livestock for his meals.

"And I've learned a lot about sustainable farming and raising of animals," he continued. "It's easy to take the food we eat for granted when we can eat good things every day."

A Silicon Valley chef who lives not far from Zuckerberg in the Northern California city of Palo Alto has introduced him to local farmers and coached him on killing his first chicken, pig, and goat, according to Fortune.

His first kill was a lobster, which he executed by boiling.

Larger animals that he kills are sent to a butcher, who sends the cut meat back to Zuckerberg and his girlfriend Priscilla to be cooked as they wish, the article indicated.

Zuckerberg has shared his dietary endeavor on his Facebook page, where he posted a photo of a chicken he killed and dishes he made using the parts.

"This year I've basically become a vegetarian since the only meat I'm eating is from animals I've killed myself," Fortune quoted Zuckerberg as saying in an email.

"I think many people forget that a living being has to die for you to eat meat, so my goal revolves around not letting myself forget that and being thankful for what I have."

Zuckerberg said he takes on a personal challenge each year, with prior goals including learning Chinese and wearing a tie.

"So far, this has been a good experience," Zuckerberg said of his new diet.

"I'm eating a lot healthier foods and I've learned a lot about sustainable farming and raising of animals."

He still visits restaurants, but opts for venues with vegetarian offerings, according to Fortune.

The Lakers hire new head coach
The Lakers hire new head coach. Lakers reportedly hire Mike Brown as new head coach. Los Angeles - The Los Angeles Lakers took a shipping term from UPS' slogan to heart, asking 'what can brown do for you,' and coming away impressed enough by Mike Brown to hire him as their new head coach.

The Lakers and Brown agreed in principle on Wednesday to a four-year deal worth between 4 million and 4.5 million dollars per season, with a team option in the final year that would give him partial pay if he is not retained, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The Lakers, according to ESPN, were expected to make the announcement on Thursday and Brown would likely ink the contract later in the week to succeed legendary coach Phil Jackson. He retired with a record 11 NBA coaching titles (six with Chicago and five with the Lakers), after the club was eliminated by Dallas in the second-round of the Western Conference playoffs.

The Lakers, however, issued a statement to update and clarify the media reports of Brown's hiring.

'In response to rampant speculation and reports about our head coaching position and Mike Brown, we've met with Mike and are very impressed with him.

'In addition, we have an outline for an agreement in place and hope to sign a contract within the next few days.'

The 41-year-old Brown has been working as an ESPN analyst since being fired from the Cleveland Cavaliers nearly a year ago. He would come to the Lakers with a solid resume, but without an all-important NBA Championship ring.

After serving as an assistant under San Antonio's Greg Popovich from 2000-03, Brown turned his first NBA head coaching job into an overwhelming success.

In five seasons with the LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers, Brown guided them to a 272-138 record and became the franchise's all-time leader.

Brown took the Cavaliers to the playoffs every year, including the 2007 NBA Finals, where they were swept by San Antonio.

After a league-best 66-16 record in 2008-09, Brown was honoured as NBA coach of the year, but the Cavs lost to Orlando in the Eastern Conference finals.

He followed that up with a sparkling 61-21 mark, but Cleveland was beaten by Boston in the second-round last season and Brown was given his pink slip.

Jackson's long-time assistant Brian Shaw was rumoured to have the inside track as the logical replacement, even though he lacked head coaching experience. Then, veteran coach Rick Adelman's name surfaced after his recent firing by the Houston Rockets, along with former coaches Jeff Van Gundy and Mike Dunleavy.

Lakers management, however, moved Brown to the top of the shortlist during a reported face-to-face interview last weekend in Los Angeles.

They were impressed by his head coaching success, his work ethic and his ability to get along with James, something he will need to do with fellow-superstar Kobe Bryant, prompting the Buss family to offer him the coveted coaching spot.

Brown has been known as a defensive coach, but the big question will be how much of the successful triangle offence he will use.

'We're not going to continue exclusively with the triangle,' team owner Jerry Buss told Playboy Radio's Michael Eaves and Bonnie-Jill Laflin on Sirius XM Radio Tuesday. 'Certainly, there will be facets of the triangle incorporated into any modern offence.'

Big Fat Gypsy Weddings second series

Big Fat Gypsy Weddings second series. (BANG) - Channel 4 has recomissioned 'Big Fat Gypsy Weddings'.
The station were thrilled with the response to the first series of the programme - which averaged 9.1 million viewers over five episodes - and Firecracker Films executives have already begun meeting members of travelling communities ahead of filming the six-episode series, which will air early in 2012.

Jes Wilkins, the show's executive producer, said: "We are excited about the creative challenge of how to follow up such a successful series."We are extremely grateful to all the gypsies and travellers who have opened up their lives to us over the last two years and we look forward to cultivating more relationships going forward."

The new series will explore similar rituals to the first - including lavish weddings and confirmation ceremonies - while also exploring life on the road, health, family, prejudice, cultural differences and relationships in different travelling communities, as well as work and finance issues.

Tina Flintoff, Channel 4 factual entertainment commissioning editor said:"'Big Fat Gypsy Weddings' was a phenomenon.

"It would have been very easy for us to just commission more of the same but we wanted to enhance the series by adding more journalism and offering an even deeper insight into the gypsy and traveller way of life without losing what makes the show accessible - the weddings, christenings and spectacular celebrations."

As well as introducing new families, the second series will also feature popular stars of the first series, including some of the brides, Irish traveller Paddy Doherty and dressmaker Thelma Madine.

President Obama arrives in the UK for state visit
President Obama arrives in the UK for state visit. LONDON (AFP) – US President Barack Obama on Monday landed in London for the second leg of his European visit, a day ahead of schedule due to a volcanic ash cloud drifting towards Britain.

Air Force One landed at London's Stansted Airport at 10:15 pm (2115 GMT) according to an AFP photographer on board, kicking off a two-day official state visit full of pomp and pageantry.

As a guest of Queen Elizabeth II, Obama will stay at Buckingham Palace but will spend his first unscheduled night in London at the US ambassador's residence.

During his visit, the US leader will meet British Prime Minister David Cameron and will also talk to opposition Labour party leader Ed Miliband.

In a joint article for The Times newspaper, Obama and Cameron hailed the "essential relationship" between the two countries.

"When the United States and Britain stand together, our people and people around the world can become more secure and more prosperous," they said. "That is the key to our relationship.

"It is founded on a deep emotional connection, by sentiment and ties of people and culture. But the reason it thrives, the reason why this is such a natural partnership, is because it advances our common interests and shared values.

"Ours is not just a special relationship, it is an essential relationship -- for us and for the world," the two leaders concluded.

The US president earlier Monday received a rapturous welcome during his brief stay in Ireland where he visited the small town which sired his ancestor Falmouth Kearney before addressing a crowd of 25,000 in Dublin.

PC to face manslaughter charges over Ian Tomlinson death
PC to face manslaughter charges over Ian Tomlinson death. The Metropolitan Police officer involved in the G20 protests death of Ian Tomlinson has been charged with manslaughter and will face trial.
On Tuesday, the Director of Public Prosecutions decided that there was enough evidence to charge Scotland Yard officer PC Simon Harwood, who will appear in court next month.

The development comes after Keir Starmer QC vowed to launch a quick and "thorough" review of his decision not to prosecute after an inquest jury unanimously ruled earlier this month that the newspaper seller was unlawfully killed at the protests.

Mr Tomlinson collapsed after suffering an internal bleed as a result of the officer's "excessive and unreasonable" force, the jury said.

Mr Starmer released a statement on Tuesday morning, which read: "On 3 May this year I announced that the decision not to prosecute anyone in relation to the death of Mr Ian Tomlinson would be reviewed in light of the verdict of unlawful killing returned by the jury at the inquest into Mr Tomlinson’s death. That review is now complete and I have this morning met Mr Tomlinson’s family to tell them the outcome..

Nato Forces Hit Tripoli With Heaviest Bombing Yet
Nato Forces Hit Tripoli With Heaviest Bombing Yet. NATO pounded the capital with more 20 airstrikes Tuesday in its most intense bombardment yet against Moammar Gadhafi's stronghold of Tripoli, while a senior U.S. diplomat said President Barack Obama has invited the Libyan rebels' National Transitional Council to open an office in Washington.

The international community has been stepping up airstrikes and diplomatic efforts against the regime in a bid to break a virtual stalemate, with the rebels in the east and Gadhafi maintaining his hold on most of the west.

The NATO airstrikes hit in rapid succession within a half-hour time span, setting off a series of explosions and sending up plumes of acrid-smelling smoke from an area around Gadhafi's sprawling Bab al-Aziziya compound in central Tripoli.

Government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim said at least three people were killed and dozens wounded in NATO strikes that targeted what he described as buildings used by volunteer units of the Libyan army.

NATO said in a statement that a number of precision-guided weapons hit a vehicle storage facility adjacent to Bab al-Aziziya that has been used to supply regime forces "conducting attacks on civilians." It was not immediately clear if the facility was the only target hit in the barrage. Bab al-Aziziya, which includes a number of military facilities, has been pounded repeatedly by NATO strikes.

At the Tripoli Central Hospital, the bodies of three mangled men in their twenties lay on stretchers, their clothing ripped and their faces partially blown away. A nurse, Ahmad Shara, told reporters taken on a government-escorted visit to the facility soon after the strikes that the men were standing outside their homes when they were killed, presumably by shrapnel.

One man who identified himself as a relative walked into the room where the bodies lay. He halted at their sight, turned around and pounded a wall as he cried out in despair.

Ash cloud causes delays across the UK
Ash cloud causes delays across the UK. Ash cloud over Europe could last for months.
The volcanic ash cloud over Europe continued to delay flights across the continent on Friday. The ash cloud is affecting the Afghanistan war. Scientists say that the cloud could continue to last for weeks, or even months. Airports in the United Kingdom will remain closed until at least 1 a.m. on Saturday.
For the second straight day, ash from a volcano in Iceland has continued cause major flight delays across Europe. Only 11,000 of the nearly 28,000 flights that normally pass over Europe are expected to take place on Friday, according to Eurocontrol, an intergovernmental organization that manages air traffic in Europe.

Stranded travelers are likely to take little solace in reports from scientists who warn that the eruption creating all the ash may continue for days, weeks, or even months. It remains difficult for scientists in Iceland to ascertain how long the eruption is likely to continue. As of Friday morning, the webcams used to monitor the volcano are still covered in a cloud of ash, reports the BBC. The main problem, however, is not the eruption, but the winds pushing the ash towards Europe.
Minimal effect on US

Although the cloud will eventually reach the US, ABC News reports that it will likely not create problems for domestic flights. However, grounded flights in Europe have affected US flights due to fleet planning issues created by planes stuck in Europe.

"This stuff will go all around the world, but by the time it gets back to the West Coast of the United States, [it'll have] pretty well fallen out to the point where it's not a danger to us," Nance told "Good Morning America" today. "But we've never seen [such a volcanic disruption] on a scale like this where it has hit a tremendous beehive of daily aviation activity."
Although the ash cloud has not had a significant effect on visibility in Europe, aviation officials have canceled flights due to concerns that ash could damage engines of planes flying at high altitudes.

Many heads of state, including President Obama, planned to fly to Poland for Sunday's funeral for President Lech Kaczynski, who was killed in a plane crash a week ago. But the closure of Krakow airport had prompted speculation that the service would be postponed. But it appears the funeral will proceed as planned.

"The will of the family is that in no circumstances should the date of the funeral ceremonies be changed, and that they should go ahead as planned," presidential aide Jacek Sasin told reporters Friday.
UK airspace closed until at least Saturday

The United Kingdom will keep their airspace closed to all but emergency flights until at least 1 a.m. on Saturday, reports CNN. Meanwhile, air transport and weather officials are discussing contingency plans in the event the ash cloud continues to create problems.

The closure has also affected US Air Force operations in support of Iraq and Afghanistan that are flown out of two bases in England. Dozens of fighter jets and tankers have been grounded until the situation changes.

The potential economic impact of the air travel delays has yet to be determined, but Associated Content reports that it may be similar to last month’s seven-day British Airports Authority strike. The strike did not close down all major airports though, so the ash cloud is expected to take an even greater toll on the airline industry. “As the world is in the midst of an economic recovery, the volcanic eruption could not have come at a more difficult time,” write the Associated Content.

Major airports across Europe remain closed as aviation officials wait for the ash cloud to disperse. Bloomberg offers a complete listing of airport closures by country.

Casey Anthony trial begins
Casey Anthony trial begins. Casey Anthony Murder Trial: Jury Chosen After 11 Days; Opening Arguments Tuesday
Jury selection was finally completed late today in the trial of Casey Anthony, the Florida woman charged with the murder of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee. A panel of nine women and eight men was chosen. Twelve will comprise the actual jury and five will be alternates when court resumes Tuesday morning for opening arguments.

So ended 11 grueling days of jury selection, lengthened by yet another round of drama Friday morning when an outburst from a courtroom spectator brought proceedings to a halt.

A woman in the courtroom gallery yelled, "She killed somebody, anyway" as jurors were being questioned.

The outburst forced Judge Belvin Perry, who is presiding over the trial, to call for a hold.

The woman held tennis shoes tied together and said, "I'm sorry," as deputies quickly escorted her out of the Clearwater, Fla., courtroom and into a holding room.

The woman, later identified by local media as Elizabeth Ann Rogers, 29, of St. Petersburg, was brought back into the courtroom to face the judge.

"I'm mentally challenged," she sobbed. "I have a 3 year-old son. I've never been to court like this."

"My fiance is in jail for domestic violence," she said.

Judge Perry found Rogers in contempt and ordered that she be taken into custody. She was sentenced to two days in jail, although Perry told her she could have received as many as 179 days.

The outburst not only caused a delay in the jury selection proceedings but the loss of a juror from the trial's already dwindling juror pool.

Perry excused another juror because she had witnessed the outburst.
Jury selection had already suffered several hiccups this week, but Perry told the courtroom he planned to swear in jurors Friday afternoon.

"The judge wants a jury now," Nancy Grace, host of "Nancy Grace" on HLN told "Good Morning America" Friday. "He's been saying that for 10 days."

The slow pace and high drama of selecting 12 jurors was in keeping with the tone of the entire case. Court rules would have allowed for up to eight alternate jurors, but the defense and prosecutors could not agree on candidates.

On Thursday, Perry was forced to bring in a brand new pool of 30 jurors after prosecutors and defense attorneys had spent the past two weeks interviewing and screening more than 150 potential jurors from the first pool.

"The well runs dry," Perry said.

While some of the delays have been procedural, most have come from the high-profile nature of the case, as well as the hardships of a trial that could last as long as eight weeks. The story of Casey Anthony, 25, has been in the headlines since her daughter was first reported missing nearly three years ago.

Jurors ultimately selected for the case will be sequestered away from their families for as long as eight weeks, and may ultimately decide whether Casey Anthony lives or dies.

"The reality is this is a death penalty case and you don't want a misstep," said Grace. "It's going to take a long time and that's just a bitter pill the judge, the lawyers and the jurors have to swallow."

Anthony is accused of killing her daughter, Caylee Anthony, who was last seen alive in June 2008. Anthony has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The child had been missing for a month before Anthony told anyone, and when she did, it was her mother, who called 911. Anthony told police she had not seen Caylee since dropping her off with a babysitter.

Anthony was arrested and charged with murder in October 2008, and a few months later, prosecutors announced they would seek the death penalty.

Her daughter's skeletal remains were found in December, less than a mile from the home the child and her mother shared with the toddler's grandparents.

The little girl's death was ruled a homicide of undetermined means.

Online poker payment processor admits to charges
Online poker payment processor admits to charges. An Illinois man admitted in federal court on Monday to helping large online poker websites dodge U.S. gambling laws by processing millions of dollars in payments from his home in Costa Rica and lying to banks about the nature of the transactions.

So-called "payment processor" Bradley Franzen, 41, pled guilty in New York to criminal charges of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering and being part of operating an illegal gambling business. He faces a possible maximum prison term of 30 years.

Franzen was among 11 people whose indictment was announced by federal prosecutors in New York last month when authorities seized the Internet domain names for Absolute Poker, Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars. Online gambling has been illegal in the United States since 2006.

Prosecutors accused the companies and the people they hired into tricking regulators and banks into illegally processing $3 billion in payments.

Franzen, who is from Illinois and has a home in Costa Rica, told the court he was contacted by an Internet poker company in 2009.

"I was aware that most U.S. banks did not process the payments ... and I understood U.S. law prohibits it," Franzen said.

Asked by U.S. Magistrate Judge Kevin Nathaniel Fox at the plea proceeding how much money was involved, Franzen said: "I do understand in general terms that it was millions of dollars, but I don't know how much."

He said he conducted most of his business from his residence in Costa Rica.

Franzen's lawyer, Sam Schmidt, declined to comment on the contents of what the judge described as "agreements and understandings" with the government that are contained in a May 10 letter.

Eight of those charged, including the three founders of the websites, are at large outside the United States.

Square rolls out new payment features
Square rolls out new payment features. First, mobile payments service Square made it easier for merchants to accept credit cards anytime, anywhere, with just a smartphone and a tiny, plastic credit-card reader. Now, the startup led by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey hopes to show them they can abandon cash registers, too.
Square already has a smartphone app that allows people to pay for items by swiping their credit card through a tiny reader that plugs into the headphone jack of a phone or iPad. Customers can sign their name on the device's touch screen, and then have a digital receipt sent to them via email or text message. About 500,000 merchants have these credit-card readers, which Square has given away for free since 2009. In return, the company takes a 2.75 percent transaction fee on sales.

On Monday, Square announced new software, Square Register, to do more. The new app takes over many of the sales features that most stores use cash registers for. It lets merchants keep tabs on inventory and change prices. A menu option allows restaurants to post food options and special deals that customers can see on their smartphones, using a companion app called Square Card Case.
Card Case is available for download after paying with Square at one of a number of merchants hand-picked by Square to participate. It acts as a digital wallet and directory and stores digital receipts for everything you've purchased over Square. For merchants, it serves as a replacement for physical rewards cards some merchants give customers to thank them for repeat visits. The app also has a directory listing local Square-accepting businesses that let users buy items on their phones when they're close to a participating shop. Card Case users can also pay at stores that are using the Register app by saying their name to the sales clerk.
So far, Card Case only includes 50 hand-picked cafes, salons, flower shops, restaurants and other retailers in New York, St. Louis, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington. The company plans to gradually add others.

LinkedIn shares plunge after strong IPO
LinkedIn shares plunge after strong IPO. LinkedIn Corp.'s shares suffered their first major setback Monday as investors began reassessing the lofty appraisal that the online networking company received in its recent initial public offering.

The company's stock price sank by as much 10 percent in early trading before rebounding slightly. As of early afternoon, LinkedIn shares were down $7.74, or 8.3 percent, to $85.35.

It could be just the start of wild rollercoaster ride that could last for several months.

The ups and downs are likely to be driven by a debate over how much LinkedIn is really worth after rabid investor demand caused its shares to more than double in their stock market debut last week. The rapid run-up left LinkedIn with a market value of about $9 billion, or about 18 times its projected revenue of about $500 million this year — a far higher multiple than far more profitable and better-established Internet companies. For instance, Internet search leader Google Inc. trades at about five times its projected revenue this year.

LinkedIn appealed to Wall Street because its IPO provided the biggest opportunity so far to invest in the online networking craze that is consuming a bigger chunk of people's time, a trend that in turn is attracting more advertising.

Although not as popular as social networking leader Facebook, LinkedIn has built an audience of more than 102 million members who use its website as way to connect with other people that might advance their professional careers. Other companies and job headhunters also scour LinkedIn for talented employees. Through a combination of fees and Internet ads, LinkedIn earned $3.4 million on revenue of $243 million. Its revenue is on pace to more than double this year as another million people set up a LinkedIn page very week.

But LinkedIn still hasn't figured out how to keep many of its members coming back to the website after they have posted their resumes. About one-fourth of LinkedIn's membership didn't even visit the website during the first three months of the year and those that did come stayed for relatively short periods of time. That's a dramatic contrast to Facebook, where its more than 500 million users are spending an increasing amount of time sharing their thoughts, playing games and posting pictures.

That's one reason an investment put together by Goldman Sachs Group Inc. valued privately held Facebook at $50 billion in January. Facebook has indicated it may file its IPO papers before May 2012.

Deadly tornadoes hit the Midwest
Deadly tornadoes hit the Midwest. American Red Cross Responds to Deadly Midwest Tornadoes. May 23, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Just hours after a series of devastating tornadoes swept through the Midwest last night, the American Red Cross opened shelters in Missouri and Minnesota to help those whose homes were damaged or destroyed.
"Our thoughts and sympathies are with those who lost loved ones or have suffered through these deadly storms," said Charley Shimanski, senior vice president, Red Cross Disaster Services. "The Red Cross already has people on the ground to help in these communities, and we have more on the way today."

The American Red Cross opened a shelter in hard-hit Joplin, Missouri, shortly after the tornado struck on Sunday. That shelter, located at Missouri Southern State University, had approximately 110 people on Sunday night and can hold up to 1,000 people. The Red Cross is working with local officials in Joplin to arrange transportation to help get people to shelters and if necessary, identify additional shelter locations.

The Red Cross also opened a shelter in Minneapolis, where 200 people spent the night following the tornadoes there.
Currently, hundreds of relief supplies are being moved from Red Cross warehouses to Joplin and other affected areas. These supplies include comfort kits, tarps, coolers, rakes and other cleanup supplies. The Red Cross is also sending in additional staff, concentrating particularly on trained health and mental health workers.

Red Cross emergency response vehicles are already responding in Missouri, helping to transport supplies to the shelter. More vehicles are headed to the area today. In addition, a Red Cross emergency communications vehicle is being sent in due to damage sustained on area infrastructure.

The Red Cross encourages people to register on the Red Cross Safe and Well website to let loved ones know they are safe by visiting www.redcross.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). From a smart phone, visit www.redcross.org/safeandwell and click on the "List Yourself as Safe and Well" or "Search for Friends and Family" link.

People in the affected areas can list themselves as "safe and well" on the Safe and Well site. Friends and family outside the disaster area can then search for messages from their loved ones by using a pre-disaster phone number or complete address. Safe and Well also enables disaster survivors to update their Facebook and Twitter status through the website.

As the Red Cross responds in the Midwest, it continues its relief operations across the South in response to April's tornadoes and the continued flooding along the Mississippi River. This spring, more than half of the country has been affected by damaging weather, disrupting people's lives from North Dakota to the East Coast. Since March 31, Red Cross disaster workers have provided thousands of overnight stays in shelters, distributed thousands of cleanup and comfort kits and served more than 1.8 million meals and snacks.

The Red Cross is able to respond quickly when emergencies happen with the help of corporations who are members of the organization's Annual Disaster Giving Program (ADGP). ADGP members pledge donations on an ongoing basis to allow the Red Cross to pre-position supplies and be ready to take immediate action when disasters occur.

Members of the American Red Cross Annual Disaster Giving Program are 3M, Altria, Aon, Cisco Foundation, ConAgra Foods, Costco Wholesale Corporation, Darden Restaurants, Inc., Dr Pepper Snapple Group, FedEx Corporation, GE Foundation, The Home Depot Foundation, John Deere Foundation, Kimberly-Clark Corporation, Kraft Foods, Lowe's Companies, Inc., Merck, Morgan Stanley, Nationwide Insurance Foundation, Northrop Grumman, Ryder Charitable Foundation, Southwest Airlines, State Farm, State Street Foundation, Target, The TJX Companies, Inc., UnitedHealthcare, UPS and Walmart.

The Red Cross depends on financial donations to help in times of disaster. Those who want to help people affected by disasters like tornadoes, floods and wildfires, as well as countless crises at home and around the world, can make a donation to support American Red Cross Disaster Relief. This gift enables the Red Cross to prepare for and provide shelter, food, emotional support and other assistance in response to disasters. Joplin tornado
Joplin tornado. Tornado kills at least 89 in SW Missouri city. A massive tornado that tore a six-mile path across southwestern Missouri killed at least 89 people as it smashed the city of Joplin, ripping into a hospital, crushing cars like soda cans and leaving behind only splintered tree trunks where entire neighborhoods once stood.

Authorities warned that the death toll could climb as search-and-rescue workers continued their efforts. Their task was made more miserable by a new thunderstorm that brought strong winds, heavy rain and hail.

City Manager Mark Rohr announced the number of known dead at a pre-dawn news conference outside the remains of a hospital that took a direct hit from Sunday's storm. Rohr said the twister cut a path more than a half-mile wide through the center of town. Much of the city's south side was leveled, with churches, schools, businesses and homes reduced to ruins by winds of up to 165 mph.

Jasper County Emergency Management Director Keith Stammer said about 2,000 buildings were damaged. Joplin Fire Chief Mitch Randles estimated the damage covered a quarter or more of the city of about 50,000 people some 160 miles south of Kansas City. He said his home was among those destroyed.

An unknown number of people were injured, and officials said patients were sent to any nearby hospitals that could take them.
Police officers manned virtually every major intersection as ambulances screamed through the streets. Rescuers involved in a door-to-door search moved gingerly around downed power lines and jagged debris. A series of gas leaks fueled fires around the city overnight, and Gov. Jay Nixon said some were still burning early Monday. Nixon feared the death toll would rise but expected survivors to be found in the rubble.

"I don't think we're done counting," Nixon told The Associated Press, adding, "I still believe that because of the size of the debris and the number of people involved that there are lives to be saved."

Crews found bodies in vehicles the storm had flipped over, torn apart and left crushed like empty cans. Triage centers and temporary shelters quickly filled to capacity. At Memorial Hall, a downtown entertainment venue, emergency workers treated critically injured patients.

At another makeshift unit at a Lowe's home-improvement store, wooden planks served as beds. Outside, ambulances and fire trucks waited for calls. In the early hours of the morning, emergency vehicles were scrambling nearly every two minutes.

After daybreak, survivors picked through the rubble of their homes, salvaging clothes, furniture, family photos and financial records, the air pungent with the smell of gas and smoking embers. Some neighborhoods were completely flattened and the leaves stripped from trees, giving the landscape an apocalyptic aura. In others where structures still stood, families found their belongings jumbled as if someone had picked up their homes and shaken them.

Kelley Fritz, 45, of Joplin, rummaged through the remains of a storage building with her husband, Jimmy. They quickly realized they would never find the belongings they stored there or much of what was in their home after the tornado ripped away the roof. Their sons, ages 20 and 17, both Eagle Scouts, ventured outside after the storm.

"My sons had deceased children in their arms when they came back," Fritz said. "My husband and I went out and saw two or three dead bodies on the ground."

Twenty people at a convenience store darted into its cooler as the building began to collapse around them. A video camera inside recorded the group praying and crying as the storm hit in two separate waves. Brennan Stebbins, 23, said he thought he might die, but all were able to climb out of the rubble of the Fast Trip without serious injuries.

Sirens gave residents about a 20-minute warning before the tornado touched down, Rohr said. Staff at St. John's Regional Medical Center hustled patients into hallways before the storm struck the nine-story building. The winds blew out hundreds of windows and leaving the facility useless.

At least four people at the hospital were killed, Dr. Jim Roscoe said. He didn't know whether they were patients or staff. He arrived at the hospital soon after the tornado and said some colleagues who also were injured worked all night long.

Rod Pace, manager of the hospital's Med Flight helicopter service, watched the tornado form. He saw the rain begin to swirl about a mile off, and the flags outside suddenly stopped blowing, only to be pulled in the opposite direction.

Then the glass doors he was holding onto — ones with a 100-pound magnet to keep them locked — were pulled open. Pace held onto the handles as he was sucked outside briefly and then pushed back in like a rag doll. He fled to the hospital's interior for cover and heard a roar. Pace and a co-worker pushed on another door to make sure it stayed shut, but it kept swaying back and forth.

"I've heard people talk about being in tornadoes and saying it felt like the building was breathing," Pace said. "It was just like that."

The tornado left a helicopter crushed on its side in the hospital parking lot, its rotors torn apart and windows smashed. Nearby, a pile of cars lay crumpled in a mass of twisted metal. Winds from the storm carried debris up to 60 miles away, with medical records, X-rays, insulation and other items falling to the ground in Greene County, said Larry Woods, assistant director of the Springfield-Greene County Office of Emergency Management.

The Joplin twister was one of 68 tornadoes reported across seven Midwestern states over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center. One person was killed in Minneapolis. But the devastation in Missouri was the worst, eerily reminiscent of the tornadoes that killed more than 300 people across the South last month.

Travel through and around Joplin was difficult, with Interstate 44 shut down and streets clogged with emergency vehicles, debris and fallen trees.

Emergency management officials rushed heavy equipment to Joplin to clear the way for search and recovery operations. Nixon declared a state of emergency, and President Barack Obama said the Federal Emergency Management Agency was working with state and local agencies.

The Joplin school district canceled all classes for the rest of the year after three of its schools were destroyed and others were damaged. Joplin High School seniors graduated Sunday before the tornado struck, and only two weeks were left for other students. The superintendent said work had already begun on a plan for rebuilding.

About 1,500 volunteers showed up Monday morning at Missouri Southern State University to help with the tornado response, said Gary Burton, a former state lawmaker who went to the campus to add a friend's construction equipment to the list of available resources.

The university's football field was used temporarily as a makeshift morgue, but Kevin Smith, one of two chaplains working with victims' families, said the bodies were later taken elsewhere. He didn't know more.

An aching helplessness settled over many residents, who could only wonder about the fate of loved ones.

Justin Gibson, 30, huddled with three relatives outside the tangled debris of a Home Depot. He pointed to a black pickup that had been tossed into the store's ruins and said it belonged to his roommate's brother, who was last seen in the store with his two young daughters.

Gibson, who has three children of his own, said his home was leveled and "everything in that neighborhood is gone. The high school, the churches, the grocery store. I can't get ahold of my ex-wife to see how my kids are."

"I don't know the extent of this yet," he said, "but I know I'll have friends and family dead."

Greg Carbin, a warning coordinator for the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., said that although both storms had high death tolls, the situation in Joplin was different to that in Alabama last month.

"This was one tornado," he said. "There were other tornadoes that touched down yesterday, but nothing to the extent of a month ago. It's different. It was not the same type of large-scale outbreak."

He estimated that the tornado that hit Joplin had winds of 135 to 165 mph.

More severe storms are coming, Carbin said, with Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma expected see tornadoes Monday and Tuesday and the bad weather spreading to the East Coast by Friday.

In Minneapolis, authorities imposed an overnight curfew in a four-square-mile area, including some of the city's poorest neighborhoods, to prevent looting and keep streets clear for emergency crews. Mayor R.T. Rybak said one liquor store was looted right after the tornado hit, and a few burglaries took place overnight.

bin laden oil tankers
bin laden oil tankers. Bin Laden Considered Attacking Oil Tankers. Al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden once considered hijacking oil tankers at sea and blowing them up, in the hopes that such attacks would paralyze commerce and send oil prices skyrocketing, the U.S. said Friday.

The plot was discovered among a treasure trove of intelligence gleaned from bin Laden's personal files and correspondence, captured by U.S. Navy SEALs earlier this month when they killed him during a raid on his hideout compound in Pakistan.

Bin Laden was constantly looking for new ways to kill large numbers of Americans, but the oil tanker plot revealed that he was also considering low-tech attacks that would cripple Western commerce.

U.S. officials have said the plot was mostly fantasy, but The Associated Press reported that the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security issued a warning to authorities and the oil industry Friday.

The report said al Qaeda sought to obtain details about oil tankers, such as their size, how they were constructed and that they could be approached best during spring and summer months. The group also concluded that tankers could best be destroyed from the inside, and that doing so would trigger an "extreme economic crisis," AP reported.

Still, U.S. officials downplayed such attacks Friday.

"We are not aware of indications of any specific or imminent terrorist attack plotting against the oil and natural gas sector overseas or in the United States," Homeland Security spokesman Matthew Chandler said in a statement. "However, in 2010 there was continuing interest by members of al-Qaida in targeting oil tankers and commercial oil infrastructure at sea."

He said the alert was aimed at urging "random screening, personnel briefings describing possible threats, procedures for reporting suspicious activities and the need for vigilance."

About half of the world's oil supplies move via the sea, the report said.

News of the tanker plot came as President Barack Obama, who authorized the raid on bin Laden's compound, traveled to CIA headquarters in Langley, Va., to thank the agency for its work in tracking down the United States' No. 1 terror suspect.

Obama met privately with about 60 CIA personnel involved in hunting down bin Laden before speaking to about 1,000 employees in the headquarters lobby, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"The work you did and the quality of information you provided made the critical difference," Obama said, adding that the clandestine operation would be studied "for generations to come."

Man finds thousands in cash at new home
Man finds thousands in cash at new home. What would you do if you happened to find $45 thousand dollars cash in the attic of a house you just bought? Well, ask Josh Ferrin of Salt Lake City, Utah. After purchasing a home for his family, Ferrin had a major “eureka” moment when he just happened to be rummaging around his new digs and decided to search the attic.

As he walked into the garage, a piece of cloth that clung to an attic door caught his eye. He opened the hatch and climbed up the ladder, then pulled out a metal box that looked like a World War II ammunition case.

“I freaked out, locked it my car, and called my wife to tell her she wouldn’t believe what I had found,” said Ferrin, who works as an artist for the Deseret News in Salt Lake City.

Then he found seven more boxes, all stuffed full with tightly wound rolls of cash bundled together with twine – more than $40,000.

Ferrin quickly took the boxes to his parent’s house to count. Along with his wife and children, they spread out thousands of bills on a table, separating the bundles one by one.

They stopped counting at $40,000, but estimated there was at least $5,000 more on the table.

Ferrin is now faced with a decision: do I keep it or do the right thing?

After most of the money was counted, Ferrin called one of Bangerter’s sons with the news.

Kay Bangerter said he knew his father hid away money because he once found a bundle of cash taped beneath a drawer in their home, but he never considered his dad had stuffed away so much over the years.

“He grew up in hard times and people that survived that era didn’t have anything when they came out of it unless they saved it themselves,” Kay Bangerter, the oldest of the six children, told the Deseret News. “He was a saver, not a spender.”

Bangerter called the money’s return “a story that will outlast our generation and probably yours as well.”

“I’m a father, and I worry about the future for my kids,” Ferrin said. “I can see him putting that money away for a rainy day and it would have been wrong of me to deny him that thing he worked on for years. I felt like I got to write a chapter in his life, a chapter he wasn’t able to finish and see it through to its conclusion.”

Well … this guy gets a gold star for honesty! And with his luck and added dose of good karma, he’ll hit the mega-millions next week. But we have to wonder if he “overlooked” a shoebox or two or stashed a couple hundred … who’s going to miss it, right? What would you do?

Derek Boogaard's death ruled an accident
Derek Boogaard's death ruled an accident. According to Mike Russo, the Hennipen County Medical Examiner has ruled the death of Derek Boogaard an accident. On his Twitter account, Russo said:Derek Boogaard's manner of death is accidental mixture of alcohol and oxycodone toxicity - per Hennepin Cty ME
This is sad, and yet somehow, welcome news. It brings another sense of closure to fans, friends, and hopefully, family. His death being ruled an accident means that it was not considered suicide, and that it is not tied, at least directly, to the concussions he suffered.

I, for one, have a new sense of peace knowing that this was not purposeful, and that there is no one to blame. The NHL does not need to go on a witch hunt and crack down on fighting. We do not need a long, drawn out debate over the man's life and how he lived it. We do not need to examine him as though he were just another statistic.

We can move on to remembering Derek for who he was, and who we will remember him as.

After jump. a statement from the Boogaard family, via the NHLPA.
"We would like to express our appreciation for the outpouring of love and support for our family during this difficult period as we grieve the loss of Derek - our son and brother. We are deeply saddened by this unimaginable loss, but we are grateful for the expression of support that has given us strength as we go through this tragic time.

It is very comforting for our family to know that, while Derek's life was far too short, he had a great impact on many people who he came into contact with. We are proud that Derek was able to live his boyhood dream to play in the National Hockey League. We are even more proud of the fact that Derek was dedicated to making a difference in his adopted communities of Minnesota and New York City, through his countless hours of charitable work.

Earlier today, we received the results of Derek's toxicology report at the time of his accidental death. After repeated courageous attempts at rehabilitation and with the full support of the New York Rangers, the NHLPA, and the NHL, Derek had been showing tremendous improvement but was ultimately unable to beat this opponent. While he played and lived with pain for many years, his passion for the game, his teammates, and his community work was unstoppable.

Our family would like to like to thank the New York Rangers, the Minnesota Wild, the National Hockey League Players' Association, and the National Hockey League for supporting Derek's continued efforts in his battle.

Derek will be greatly missed and will never be forgotten by his fans, friends, and teammates, and especially by us - his family. We respectfully ask for continued privacy as we grieve the loss of Derek."
