8 ways to protect your Facebook privacy
8 ways to protect your Facebook privacy. As Facebook becomes the window to the Web for its more than 500 million users, the security of the social network has never been a hotter topic. While it can be hard to make a Facebook account completely hack-proof, you can do a lot. Here are eight Facebook settings that you can check now:

1. Who can see what?
Your first stop should be your privacy settings, which you can get to under "Account" at the top right of any page.
Here, make sure you're using a set of custom settings. Click "Customize settings" under the grid on that page to see who can see which parts of your Facebook profile.
Unless you use your Facebook account as a completely public page, every single one of these options should at least be set to "Friends Only." From there, you can make each setting more specific, keeping your photos hidden from certain people, for example.
2. Place your friends in lists
To make the previous tip more powerful, place your Facebook friends in lists. If you begin to define lists such as Co-workers, Best Friends, Employees, Students, etc., you can set each of your settings to be visible or not visible to a whole list of people.
To do this, go to "Edit Friends" under the Account menu. Type in friends' names to add them to a list. Then make sure that only your best friends, for example, can see the photos you post. Or make sure that your students or employees don't see your status updates.
You also can add a friend to a list as you accept their friend request.
3. Who can find you?
Facebook also allows you to set what people see if they're not your friend. Under privacy settings, click "View Settings" under the "Connecting on Facebook" setting at the top of the page.
Here, you can set what people see when they search for you on Facebook.
Pay special attention to the bottom option, which allows you to set who can see what you "like" on Facebook. Many don't realize that by default this option is set to show everyone what you like.
Don't want that future employer to know you "like" skipping class? This is a good thing to check.
4. Browse Facebook securely
One of Facebook's most vulnerable features is that much of your browsing is done without a secure connection to the website. Hackers have exploited this hole by accessing your personal information if you use Facebook on a public or unsecured Wi-Fi network.
In your account settings, choose Account Security. There's a check box there to enable secure browsing whenever possible. Check that.
You'll soon see that Facebook will use "https://" instead of "http://." That's how you know you're more secure.
5. Who is logging in as you?
One of Facebook's greatest security features is the ability to individually approve each computer or mobile device that logs into your account.
You can name each computer you use Facebook with (work, home, laptop, iPhone, etc.).
To turn this on, go to your account settings, click on "Account Security" and choose that you want an e-mail or text message when someone tries to log in from a computer that isn't one you've approved.
Here, you can also see all the open sessions of Facebook tied to your account. Someone logging in from five states away? Click "end activity," and they'll be stopped in their tracks.
6. Which apps know you?
As we have used Facebook over the years, each of us has amassed a list of applications that have access to our Facebook information.
To see which apps have access to your Facebook information, go to your privacy settings and click edit under "Apps and Websites" at the bottom left of the page.
On the next page, click edit settings next to "Apps you use."
Here, you'll see a list of all the apps that have your information on file. Many of them are used for convenience, such as integration with the popular Instagram photo-sharing app or commenting services on news websites. But there are certainly some you could lose.
Click the X next to any app you want to yank your information from.
7. Even your friends' apps know you, too
This one is even scarier. On the same app privacy page, check out the subhead that says "Info accessible through your friends."
You may not know it, but anything your friends can see on Facebook can also be seen by any app that your friends add on Facebook — including apps that you have no idea were ever given access. To disallow this, click on edit settings and uncheck all the boxes that allow you to choose what about you can be shared with apps that your friends add. Click save.
8. Who can post on your wall?
Facebook security has become a veritable cesspool of spam. Many of these spammy links are click-jacking schemes, which spread by posting links on a bunch of your friends' walls.
The only foolproof way to prevent these links from gumming up your own wall is to set it so that no one can post directly on your wall. Friends still can comment on your status messages, links and photos, but can't leave you a public note.
To change this setting, head to the customize settings area under privacy. Then uncheck the "Enable" box where it allows friends to post on your wall.

Facebook to stream MLB games

The social-media giant continues its foray into the video market with live baseball.

Facebook has started a little spring training of its own.

The social-networking giant is offering users live streaming of Major League Baseball games. The service was introduced this week, featuring a game of the day from baseball's spring training season.

The games are largely a promotion to lure subscribers to MLB.TV's $120 season-long subscription package. But the move also looks like a warm-up to Facebook's ongoing push in to the nascent streaming-video market.

Last week, Facebook and Warner Brothers Digital started a movie-rental demo with a $3 Batman video, "The Dark Knight." While a small step, it was seen as a threatening venture into the streaming businesses of Netflix (NFLX) and Amazon (AMZN).

The move into live sports, however, is a bold new direction that puts Facebook on a direct path toward one of the prime offerings of cable shops like Comcast (CMCSA), Time Warner Cable (TWC) and Cablevision (CVC).

Facebook's MLB service comes after a recent push by Apple (AAPL) to sell a $15 MLB.TV application for iPad users.

Facebook has a large built-in audience of 600 million users that it can treat to expanded service offerings. But rivals have the challenge of trying to sell expansive service offerings to a not-so-loyal subscriber base.

The Incredible Sculptures Made From Sticky Tape
These works of art are sure to stick in your head - as they've been sculpted entirely out of adhesive tape.
The amazing see-through models of a peacock, a galleon and hot air balloon are entries in a bizarre art competition.
They are made by sticking bits of tape together in a 'free-form' style or by wrapping them around objects which are then removed from the piece.
There are also models of a gun-toting arm emerging from a TV screen and a sweets vending machine.
The entries are typically made from between 30 and 50 rolls of tape and take days to complete.
Other materials, such as wire, cardboard and paint, can make up to ten per cent of the model if used to support or enhance it.
The models had to be made using Scotch packaging tape and the winning entry will receive £3,100 when judging takes place next month.
Keri Warren, from Scotch, said: 'We are excited by the amount of attention this competition has attracted.
'All entries are unique in their own way and I find the level of detail and creativity outstanding.
'Many of the entrants photograph their sculptures in settings that help to bring their pieces to life, which helps us all to relate them.
"The competition allows the entrants to develop and showcase their artistic talents with a medium that is outside the typical realm of artistry.'

The Million Pound Dog
They say money can't buy love – but £1million will get you man's most expensive best friend.

A red Tibetan mastiff has become the priciest dog in the world after being sold for 10 million Chinese yuan, or £945,000.

Big Splash, or Hong Dong in Chinese, was bought by a coal baron from the north of China.

And it's lucky his new master is a multi-millionaire, because the hefty price tag doesn't factor in Big Splash's diet – enough chicken and beef to fill a growing 180lb dog, spiced up with Chinese delicacies such as sea cucumber and abalone.

His owner will need a big house too, as adult Tibetan Mastiffs have been known to weigh as much as 286lb, or more than 20 stone – the same as a sizeable rugby player. However the typical weight for a fully grown Tibetan Mastiff is around 13 stone.

But according to breeder Lu Liang, Big Splash is a 'perfect specimen' and the extravagant price for the 11-month-old is completely justified.

He said: 'We have spent a lot of money raising this dog, and we have the salaries of plenty of staff to pay' – adding that the new owner could charge almost £10,000 a time for Big Splash to breed with a female.

The high price paid for the dog is a sign that the red Tibetan mastiff has become a status symbol in China, replacing jewellery and cars as a way for the super-rich to show off their wealth.

Not only is red considered a lucky colour, but Tibetan mastiffs are thought to be holy animals, blessing their owners' health and security.

Tibetans believe the dogs have the souls of monks and nuns who were not good enough to be reincarnated as humans or into Shambhala, the heavenly realm.

Owners of the breed have included Queen Victoria, King George IV and Genghis Khan – who supposedly took 30,000 of the dogs with his army in his bid to conquer Western Europe.

These days there are only around 300 Tibetan mastiffs in the UK, and puppies sell for a more reasonable £850 to £1,000.

James Pally, a Tibetan mastiff breeder from Pantymwyn near Mold in Flintshire, North Wales, said:

'They are very smart and they think for themselves and can sense danger very acutely.

'Tibetan mastiffs were originally used to guard the livestock and they are very good with other animals and they love children.

'I have six of them and if you don't give them enough attention they sit in front of the TV.'

The title of most expensive dog in the world was previously held by a Tibetan mastiff called Red Lion, who was valued at £915,000 last year.

The Shaggy Dog Likes to Scooter Round Town

As shaggy dog stories go, the one about Norman the very bright Briard who is a wizz riding his scooter ranks high on the list.

The clever canine, who lives with the Cobb family in Canton, Georgia, competes in many obedience competitions and received his Companion Dog Title at just 15 months of age after four first place finishes.
But it's his razor scooter that has remained the pooch's passion since he was a mere pup when his owner, Karen Cobb, took him out for his first spin.

'He began playing with the kid's scooter in the backyard and we thought it would be fun to give him a ride on it,' says Karen. 'Then we decided to teach him to push it, and now he loves riding his scooter.'

His scooting antics have already made him popular on the Internet, and his Facebook page has quite a following.
Norman, now 20 months old, has even attracted the attention of television show host and comedian David Letterman and last month made an appearance on Stupid Pet Tricks on The Late Show.

Briards originate from France and their recognised talents include search and rescue, police work, military work, herding, watchdogging and guarding, but they also also make excellent companions, finding favour with Napoleon and Thomas Jefferson.

Meet the penguin with a heart-shaped breast
While most of us might wear our hearts on our sleeve, this little chap shows it off in just the right place.

He is an Emperor penguin chick whose change of plumage into adulthood was brrrrrilliantly blessed by Mother Nature.

The white heart-shaped patch on his chest is a natural formation due to the moulting of his feathers.

The baby penguin is blissfully aware that not only is he the focus of a heart-warming image, but that he is also literally one in a million too.

Award-winning photographer and wildlife film-maker Sue Flood said that in the 20 years she has been taking pictures in the Arctic and Antarctic, and on more than 30 trips to the frozen plains, she had never picked up such a penguin phenomenon.

She said: 'It's the only one I have ever come across with a bib of this shape.

'I took the picture at a time when Emperor penguin chicks are gaining their adult plumage and are a mix of grey baby down and "penguin suit" colours.

'This one is one in a million and in all my time as a photographer he's the only one I have seen with a bib of this shape - when I saw it, I just couldn't believe it'.

The Emperor penguin is the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species.

Its diet consists primarily of fish but can also include crustaceans, such as krill, and squid.

While hunting, it can remain submerged for up to 18 minutes, diving to a depth of 535m and is able to reduce its metabolism and shut down non-essential organ functions in order to do this.

The Emperor penguin is perhaps best known for the sequence of journeys adults make each year in order to mate and to feed their offspring.

The only penguin species that breeds during the Antarctic winter, it treks as many as 120 km over the ice to breeding colonies which may include thousands of individuals.

The female lays a single egg, which is incubated by the male while the female returns to the sea to feed.

Mrs Flood, who has worked on some of the BBC's most successful natural history programmes including Blue Planet and Natural World, has won a clutch of awards for her photography.

Some of her amazing pictures have now been drawn together for her first book, Cold Places, which is published later this month.

It coincides with an exhibition - Cold Places: From Pole To Pole - of 50 of her photographs at London's prestigious Getty Images Gallery.

She said: 'There are times when I question why I'm so drawn to the Poles - for instance, when camping in -40 degree temperatures, enduring the hardships of macho ice-breaker life or when my eyes won't open because my eyelashes have frozen together.

'But there is something magical about the light, the isolation and the stillness, and something inspirational about how resolute animals and people have to be to survive there.

'Yes, the Poles are cold places but they also warm the heart, as I hope my book and images show.'

Mike Myers Secretly Weds
Mike Myers secretly wed longtime girlfriend Kelly Tisdale more than five months ago, the actor's rep confirms to New York Post's Page Six. The two tied the knot in a private ceremony in NYC.
The comedian, 47, and his 30-something bride began dating in 2006, after Myers split from his first wife, comedy writer and actress Robin Ruzan.

The Shrek star and Ruzan were married for 12 years before ending their union in 2005; he cited his then-wife as the inspiration for Austin Powers, as he played a similarly goofy character at home. Ruzan's mother, Linda, also inspired one of his most popular Saturday Night Life characters, Coffee Talk TV host Linda Richman.

Lady Gaga Arrives by Private Plane in Canada Wearing Another of Her Revealing Outfits
Lady Gaga Arrives by Private Plane in Canada Wearing Another of Her Revealing Outfits
Most people look travel-worn by the time they embark off of a long haul flight and would hate nothing more than having their photograph taken.
But not Lady Gaga - she got off of her private jet today in Canada and went straight into a photo shoot on the tarmac.
The camera-ready singer had just arrived in Toronto from Paris where she strutted the catwalk at a Thierry Mugler runway show.

Gaga did not disappoint in her latest ensemble which was a cross between a Flashdance costume and rocker chic ensemble.
The 24-year-old wore her favourite heel-less leather boots which did a great balancing act on.
She wore purple tights which showed off her black thong underwear underneath and matching purple gloves.
A black leather side-less top finished off her look.
Her new hairstyle, which she is forever changing is now a blonde do with a heavy black fringe.
Gaga strutted down the stair of the private plane as photographer Terry Richardson captured her walking from the jet to her tour bus.
She will be performing at the Air Canada Centre tonight as part of her Monster Ball tour.
Gaga had strutted down the catwalk earlier this week for the stylish Nicola Formichetti collection as creative director of Thierry Mugler at Paris Fashion Week.
Gaga had worn a predictably outrageous outfit for her Thierry Mugler show, wearing a sheer black dress and military-inspired hat while making her entrance in a cloud of cigarette smoke.
The Born This Way Star had worn long blonde pigtails to strut like a pro to her forthcoming new single Government Hooker for Formichetti, the man behind her infamous meat dress.
The singer also released the video for her new single Born This Way this week.
In the provocative and risqué new clip, which is set in outer space, Gaga is seen to give birth to an unknown being, strips off to her underwear for a dance routine and gets dressed up as a skeleton in a suit.

Eminem: Most “Liked” Artist on Facebook

Eminem
Eminem may have made his name by making fun of pop stars, but nowadays he is proving himself to be the most popular of them all. Today (February 24) the rapper made history on Facebook by surpassing Lady Gaga as the most liked, living artist on the social networking site.
As of press time Em’s page currently stands at 28,898,000+ likes, while Lady Gaga trails behind at 28,879,000+ likes. This battle is sure to be ongoing, as Gaga is known to have a very supportive fanbase, but this marks the first time XXL‘s March 2011 cover boy has taken the lead.

This news comes at a great time for the lyricist. In addition to his growing Facebook popularity, Shady is coming close to breaking yet another Gaga record. According to the The Detroit News, Em has become only the third artist in history to surpass 1 billion overall views on youtube. With 1.164 billion views as of this Monday, Em joins Lady Gaga (who has 1.189 billion views total) and Justin Bieber (who leads with 1.3 billion views).

If the latest chatter is true, we may finally get our first glimpse at the next iPad in a little more than a week.

Kara Swisher over at All Things Digital says she has "multiple" sources who claim that Apple will hold a media event in San Francisco on March 2.

Apple has yet to officially confirm an event next week, but according to Swisher, the company "seems poised" to take the wraps off the long-anticipated iPad 2, with the event "likely" to take place at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.
The story comes just hours after a flurry of rumors that the next-generation iPad had been delayed, with major news outlets eventually backtracking on the claim Monday.

While Apple hasn't said a peep about the new iPad yet, rumors peg it to be both thinner and lighter than the 1.5-pound, 0.52-inch original, with at least one camera for video chat, a souped-up processor, and more RAM.

There had also been talk that the iPad 2 would arrive with an improved screen similar to the "retina" display on the current iPhone 4, but a recent report in the Wall Street Journal shot down those rumors, noting that the new display may "disappoint customers" hoping for a "significant improvement" in resolution.

The news comes just days before the arrival of the Motorola Xoom, a tablet with a 10.1-inch display that runs on Android 3.0 "Honeycomb," the new tablet-centric version of Google's mobile Android platform.

The next iPad also faces competition from the upcoming, Android-powered LG G-Slate, RIM's BlackBerry Playbook, and the WebOS-powered Touchpad from HP.
